Latest News - TYB win first IMBA competition of the Year

The Marching Vikings placed first in the Open Class in the first of the IMBA hosted competitions this Summer, which was hosted in Boyle, Co. Roscommon. It was a great success for the band as they secured first place in five out of six captions (music ensemble and effectvisual ensemble and effect, field visual, field music, and field percussion). Congratulations to all members of both the senior and cadet bands for a fantastic performance and to all other bands who competed yesterday. A special congratulations is in order for the Athlone Ravens who, like our cadet band, successfully completed their first ever competition. As always, if anyone has any photos or videos, please email media@tallaghtyouthband.com.

About the Band

The Band was founded in 1977 by Fr. Len Perrem and assisted by Paddy McNally. The band was originally known as the Priory Youth Band, subsequently changing to its present name. The band had many sections including Brass, Reed, Bag Pipes, Majorettes, Flag Twirlers, Drummers and Irish dancers. The Irish Dancers and Pipes sections are now defunct, but the band still has it's main brass, reed, drum, and colour guard corps. More recently, to coincide with the influx of junior members, TYB have created a cadet corp where young musicians and dancers can gain a foothold on musicianship, marching and performing arts before entering the senior band.

In the late 80's and early 90's, the band consisted of over one hundred members and frequently traveled across Europe to compete in many prestigious competitions, and picked up some awards along the way; most notably world championship gold medals.

In March 2004, the band traveled to the "Big Apple" to participate in the New York City St. PatrickÕs Day parade. This trip was excellent and really brought the members closer. The band took home best international band at the parade beating some local rivals, which made the win sweeter.

In 2005 the band returned from a excellent trip to the Zurich international marching band championships were they finished in 4th place in the parade competition only losing out on 3rd place by a half a point. 2006 was a fantastic year for the band. In March, the band travelled to London for the St Patrick's Day Parade. Despite bouts of sea-sickness from the rough journey across the Irish Sea, they still went and performed outstandingly both in the parade and a Gala ball for expatriates and celebrities, including former Republic of Ireland Manager Jack Charlton. The competition season for the Band was the best in the history of the band. The season started off with a bang, with the band being crowned, All Ireland Marching Band Parade Champions for 2006, This was followed by the field competitions in the summer, where the band finished 1st in two of league competitions and came 2nd in the All Ireland Marching Band Field Championships.

In 2007, TYB participated in the St Patrick's Day parade in Boston, Massachusetts, where the band completed a gruesome 6.5 mile parade for St. Patrick's Day Parade, but the kids stayed in great form, smiling all along the parade for a delighted "Irish" crowd.

The band took a break from competition in 2008, many members left for University or Employment. The Year was used to build up the afformentioned cadet band, and now the Marching Vikings are coming back to compete in the 2009 season with a new show with the theme "Heroes vs. Villains". We look forward to seeing you on competition day and hearing your voices from the stands!
